Welcome new niixers! Whether you’ve been out of the game for a few years or new to the game altogether, starting an exercise regimen can be intimidating. Throw into the mix that health and fitness trends are constantly changing and now you are even more confused. People ask me all the time where to start and the most important thing is to start with the basics.. Here are my top tips to getting cracking with your workout plan without feeling overwhelmed! What you are going to need..

1. The right pair of shoes

When it comes to workout clothes anything goes, whether it’s the flashiest leggings or an old t shirt you found in the drawer, whatever you feel comfortable in works. When it comes to shoes however there is a right and wrong answer. If you cut corners in the shoe department, your whole body could really suffer. Proper fitting shoes, while a little bit pricier are well worth the investment – they prevent injury and significantly improve performance. Your feet AND body will thank you later!

2. Basic at home gear

All you need for a great workout is some space and possibly a mat / thick towel for some comfort! Weights are not obligatory although resistance bands and small weights can be great additions. Using your body weight however is free and has great results!

3. Find your ‘WHY’

Weight loss motivation starts with figuring out why you really want to lose weight in the first place. Maybe it’s to have more energy, to keep up with your kids, to live longer or to fit into your favorite pair of jeans! Find that reason and remind yourself of it every single day. The clearer you can be about your reasoning, the more motivated you will be

4. Set some goals!

Studies show that making a list of your goals makes you more likely to achieve them, so get out a pen and paper and get specific! How much weight do you actually want to lose? And how will you make it happen? Maybe your goal is to do cardio three times per week and strength train twice a week. Or maybe one of your goals is to eliminate all fizzy drinks and sugary beverages from your diet. These are concrete goals that will help you lose weight. Tackling weight loss one goal at a time makes it more manageable and realistic, too. Focusing on your goals is great. But withholding your own approval “until you lose weight” is not a good plan. Self-love starts and ends with you, and no number on the scale can give you the internal validation you need to believe in your own worth. You have to love yourself TODAY because of the beautiful person you are, not withhold your own approval until you reach your ideal weight.

5. Establish a rewards system..

What is it that motivates you? Is it some new workout leggings, a special meal, a nice hot bath or some time with friends and family? Always reward yourself along the way!

6. Stop making excuses!

There really is no time like the present, so don’t wait for Monday or a new week, new month….get started today!
